CityNews Chief Meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai has analyzed both events and predicts the approaching storm will rank about half as intense as the previous one, which she classified as a maximum severity event.

The precipitation will begin in the predawn hours around 4 or 5 a.m. Wednesday, potentially creating wet road conditions for early morning commuters. Unlike typical mid-July mornings that average 11°C, temperatures will start unusually warm at 18°C due to the incoming weather system. The humidity will steadily increase throughout the day, with humidex values making it feel like 35°C by afternoon - creating uncomfortably muggy conditions even before the main storm cells develop.

Initial morning showers will further saturate already damp ground from last week's storms, creating prime conditions for potential runoff. After a brief lull around midday, the most intense weather will develop between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., coinciding with both school dismissals and the afternoon commute. This three-hour window could see the heaviest downpours and lightning activity, with rainfall rates potentially exceeding 20mm per hour in the strongest cells.

Regional Rainfall Variations

The storm's impacts will vary significantly across the Greater Toronto Area due to its scattered nature. Eastern regions including Toronto proper, Durham Region, and extending toward Peterborough will likely receive the most consistent rainfall, with widespread totals of 10-20 millimeters expected. However, any locations caught under thunderstorm cells could see dramatically higher amounts approaching 50 millimeters in just a few hours - enough to overwhelm storm drains and cause street flooding.

Areas west of Toronto, including Mississauga and Brampton, may experience less total rainfall but could see stronger wind gusts during storm cells. This spatial variability differs from last week's system which brought more uniform impacts across the entire region. Residents should prepare for different hazards depending on their location within the GTA.

Wind conditions during Wednesday's storms will be notably less extreme than the damaging 130 km/h gusts recorded last week. Current models predict sustained winds of 60-80 km/h across most areas, with isolated gusts near 90 km/h possible in western portions of the GTA during the most intense storm cells. These winds could still knock down weakened tree limbs but are below the threshold for widespread structural damage.

"We start talking about the potential for wind damage and power outages at 90+ kilometres per hour - in the city, we shouldn't get there with these ones [on Wednesday]," Ramsahai explained. The meteorologist also noted that risks for tornadoes, large hail, and prolonged power outages remain significantly lower than during the previous event, though not completely absent in the strongest storm cells.

Comparison to the July 12 Storm

This mid-week weather system arrives just seven days after an exceptionally destructive storm that caused millions in damages across southern Ontario. That event overwhelmed stormwater systems, flooded hundreds of basements, knocked down thousands of trees, and left some residents without power for days. While some similar impacts may occur Wednesday, the reduced intensity across all hazard categories should limit the scale of damage.

Ramsahai quantified the difference between the two systems, stating: "If last week's severity was a 10/10, I am forecasting [Wednesday's] to be closer to five or six out of ten." The more localized nature of the heaviest rainfall and reduced wind speeds should prevent the type of widespread community impacts seen last week, though isolated problem areas could still emerge.

Flood Risk and Ground Conditions

The combination of saturated soil from last week's historic rainfall and additional moisture from Wednesday's morning showers creates ideal conditions for potential flash flooding when the heavier afternoon rains arrive. Low-lying areas, neighborhoods with aging stormwater infrastructure, and locations that experienced flooding previously remain at highest risk. Urban areas with extensive paved surfaces may see rapid accumulation of water on roads and in underpasses.

Residents in known flood-prone areas should monitor conditions closely and avoid driving through standing water. The concentrated timing of the heaviest rains during evening rush hour could lead to hazardous driving conditions across the region's major roadways and highways. Emergency services are preparing for potential water rescues in flood-prone intersections and underpasses.

Broader Weather Patterns and Climate Context

This back-to-back storm occurrence fits into a broader pattern of increasing precipitation volatility in southern Ontario. Climate scientists have documented a 20% increase in heavy rainfall events across the Great Lakes region since the 1950s. Warmer air holds more moisture, allowing storms to produce heavier downpours when conditions align. The quick succession of significant rain events tests the limits of urban infrastructure designed for historical weather patterns.
