Entain Drops from FTSE 100 Amid Share Price Decline and Operational Challenges, Though Turnaround Shows Promise

Entain has been officially demoted from the FTSE 100 index to the FTSE 250, as confirmed by the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) in its quarterly review. The change will take effect on 21 September, marking a significant shift for the gaming operator, which had been a constituent of the FTSE 100 since 22 June 2020. This relegation reflects a challenging period for the company, which has seen its market capitalization shrink to £3.39 billion amid a broader decline in gaming sector valuations.

The Fall in Share Price and Market Capitalization

Entain's share price has fallen sharply over the past year, dropping 37% since September 2025 and currently trading at 530p. This represents a 73% decline from its all-time high in September 2021. The operator, which first listed on the LSEG’s main market in February 2016 under its previous name, GVC Holdings, has struggled to maintain investor confidence amid regulatory pressures and operational missteps. The company’s commitment to deriving 100% of its revenue from regulated markets has not shielded it from broader industry headwinds.

Regulatory and Legal Troubles

In November 2023, Entain agreed to a £585 million financial penalty, a £20 million charitable donation, and £10 million in legal costs to settle a bribery case brought by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) over its historic Turkish operations. This settlement added to the company’s financial strain and reputational damage. The operator has also cycled through four CEOs in rapid succession, reflecting internal instability. Former interim CEO Gavin Isaacs, who stepped down after a brief tenure, acknowledged the difficulties in modernizing Entain’s legacy technology, a key challenge in stabilizing its digital operations.

Challenges in Digital Business and Acquisitions

Entain has faced persistent struggles within its digital business, including reports of failed integrations following a series of acquisitions. These issues have contributed to declining growth and damaged the company's reputation. In response, Entain launched a major turnaround effort aimed at cutting costs and revitalizing its digital operations. The company has also prioritized updating its outdated technology infrastructure, which former CEO Gavin Isaacs identified as a critical hurdle during his tenure.

Restructuring Efforts and Cost-Cutting Measures

Under the leadership of current CEO Stella David, Entain has implemented aggressive restructuring measures to streamline operations and reduce costs. The company has closed retail shops, cut operational roles, and exited its Central and Eastern European (CEE) business. CFO Michael Snape stated that the CEE divestment is expected to reduce leverage below 3x, with excess capital returned to shareholders. These moves are part of a broader strategy to stabilize the business and refocus on core markets.

Digital Growth and Market Recovery

Despite its challenges, Entain has shown signs of recovery in key markets. The company reported double-digit digital growth in Q1 2025, driven by strong performances in the UK, Brazil, and the US. In the first half of this year, markets such as Australia, New Zealand, Spain, and the UK have been highlighted as growth drivers. Analysts from Goodbody and UBS have expressed cautious optimism, with UBS maintaining a buy rating and citing Entain’s potential upside in the European gaming sector. Goodbody’s August note praised the company’s H1 adjusted EBITDA as 'comfortably ahead of expectations,' with the UK and Ireland particularly strong performers.

Broader Industry Trends and Exchange Shifts

Entain’s struggles are part of a wider downturn in the gaming sector, where companies have faced declining valuations and regulatory pressures. Flutter Entertainment, another major operator, recently delisted from the LSEG to pursue higher valuations in the US market. However, as analyst Ben Robinson noted, 'Deeper water doesn’t help if the current is moving somewhere else,' suggesting that simply relisting may not solve underlying performance issues. For Entain, the immediate focus remains on executing its turnaround plan, stabilizing its digital operations, and proving its long-term viability to investors.

Analyst Sentiment and Future Outlook

While Entain’s share price decline and FTSE 100 demotion signal ongoing challenges, analyst sentiment has improved in recent quarters. The company’s cost-saving initiatives and renewed focus on profitable markets have begun to yield results. CEO Stella David has adopted a cautiously optimistic tone, describing Q1 performance as a step in the right direction. With regulatory pressures persisting across Europe, Entain’s ability to sustain growth in its core markets while managing leverage will be critical to its recovery. The coming quarters will determine whether its restructuring efforts can fully restore investor confidence.

The Road Ahead for Entain

Entain's future hinges on its ability to handle both internal restructuring and external market conditions. The company's decision to exit non-core markets and focus on regulated jurisdictions aligns with broader industry trends toward compliance and sustainability. However, the gaming sector continues to face significant regulatory and tax challenges across multiple jurisdictions. Entain's recent performance in core markets suggests the company may be turning a corner, but maintaining this momentum will require consistent execution of its strategic initiatives. The leadership team's ability to deliver on promises of growth and efficiency improvements will be closely watched by investors in the months ahead.
