Haunted Walk tours descend into CN Tower's underground cavern for Halloween
The special event offers a rare look into restricted areas and a cavern two feet underground.
TORONTO · The CN Tower is opening its restricted underground areas for a special Halloween walking tour in partnership with the Haunted Walk company. The event, called Haunted Walk: Beneath the Tower, will take visitors on a journey through off-limits spaces before descending two feet underground into an area known as "The Cavern." From there, guests will be able to look directly up into the tower's enormous central core, a perspective very few visitors ever get to experience. The tours are based on age 13 and up and will run for only two days, on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.
"Most people visit the CN Tower to go up. We're taking them in the opposite direction," said Jim Dean, creative director of Haunted Walk. He said the stories told throughout the walk are based on real events. "Our Haunted Walk guides will share mysterious stories from our previous paranormal investigations at the Tower, along with some intriguing experiences reported by CN Tower staff." Dean divulged a few details about these eerie experiences, including unexplained children's laughter and footsteps stomping in areas beneath the lobby.
The decision to open these doors was inspired by public interest during the tower's 50th anniversary celebrations. "As part of our 50th anniversary celebrations, we opened some of the Tower's behind-the-scenes spaces, including the Cavern, to the public for the first time during our Doors Open," said Jodie Hunt, manager of communications for the CN Tower. "That incredible interest showed us how much people wanted to experience a side of the CN Tower they had never seen before and inspired us to find a way to give more people that opportunity." Before guests ascend back to ground level, they will be treated to an underground light and music show. "The sound-and-light show brings together the central themes of the experience. From two floors underground, guests watch lights sweep upward through the Tower's enormous core, revealing its extraordinary scale from a perspective few people ever get to see," Dean said. After the tour, visitors will head to the CN Tower's lower observation level for city views.
Each guided walking tour lasts approximately 30 minutes. Walks will run every hour starting at 11 a.m., with the last tour beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets are $68.49, plus applicable taxes and fees, and include admission to the CN Tower's main and lower observation levels. They can be purchased directly through the CN Tower's website. The CN Tower's hidden caverns and otherwise uncharted territory come with their own haunted secrets that are hardly ever made public.
