Costco members share tips on saving beyond groceries

Readers say the warehouse club's value extends to pharmacy, tires, electronics and travel, often justifying the annual fee.

Costco members are sharing ways to maximize the value of their warehouse club memberships beyond the grocery aisles, from cheaper prescriptions to free tire services.

The tips come after a personal finance columnist shared reflections on a family membership, prompting readers to chime in with their own wisdom.

Many pointed to the pharmacy as a source of savings. "Pet medicine is a fraction of the cost at the vet," wrote one pet parent.

The columnist confirmed that in Toronto, eye drops for a puppy cost around $70 at a neighbourhood vet but less than $20 at Costco.

While anyone can use a Costco pharmacy, members said the low fees for filling or refilling medications make the trip worthwhile.

Others highlighted savings on big-ticket items like appliances and electronics, noting that the 2-per-cent cash back from an executive membership helps offset the higher annual fee.

"I bought my Apple Watch and iPhone at Costco. It was just slightly cheaper than from the Apple Store in my neighbourhood, plus I got the 2 per cent added to my annual check. It all adds up!!" one customer wrote.

Several happy customers wrote in to sing the praises of Costco’s prices, free delivery and easy returns when it comes to appliances and furniture.

Costco gas stations and tire centres were also frequently mentioned as membership perks.

According to the company's website, drivers are entitled to free pressure checks, tire balancing, tire rotations and flat repairs for the lifetime of the tire.

"Regular rotation of tires on my EV is essential because of the weight of the vehicle; if I took it to the dealer it would cost me $80, plus tax," wrote an electric vehicle driver.

"I have the service done for free at Costco three times a year, saving me $240. The Costco tire shop takes appointments and completes the service in 45 minutes; just enough time for me to do my shopping and have a $1.50 hot dog for lunch."

Several readers praised Costco Travel for rental cars. "I myself use Costco Travel for booking rental cars when I am away travelling," one wrote.

"Not only are their quoted rates excellent but you get an automatic upgrade to a better car plus a second driver is always at no extra charge, whether or not that driver is your spouse."

Savings on hearing aids were also noted, with one member saying they’ve saved thousands of dollars on that alone thanks to their Costco membership.

Still, one couple reported that a local retailer now matches Costco prices on hearing aids, which spares them a long drive to the warehouse.

Some members said they consciously seek out Canadian products at Costco stores, finding it much easier to avoid U.S. produce there than at local grocery stores.

The columnist's original take was that a Costco membership was well worth it, even though it did not significantly cut the family’s monthly grocery spend.

Most readers concurred the annual price of admission pays off, whether that shows up as lower spending or in the ability to stretch your grocery buck further.
