VIA Rail partners with children's hospital foundations to offer free train travel for care
The three-year initiative aims to ease financial burdens for families needing specialized pediatric care at six hospitals in Ontario and Quebec.
VIA Rail Canada and Canada's Children's Hospital Foundations have announced a three-year partnership to provide free train trips for families whose children need specialized medical care. The initiative aims to ease the financial and logistical burdens for families travelling to six children's hospitals along the Quebec City-Windsor corridor. The collaboration does not involve patient transfers between hospitals or provide ambulance or treatment services. It focuses on helping families access care not available near their homes.
The partnership brings together the national railway and a network representing 13 institutions that support children's hospitals across the country. According to a press release published on VIA Rail's website on November 3, 2026, eligible families will receive free travel to six specified hospitals in Ontario and Quebec. The program is a response to the challenges faced by families, particularly those with complex or chronic health cases requiring frequent visits. The six hospitals benefiting from the free travel program are McMaster Children's Hospital in Hamilton, The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa, the Montreal Children's Hospital, the Sainte-Justine University Health Center in Montreal, and the Children's Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre in London, Ontario. The initiative is designed to facilitate access to these hospitals for medical care, not to provide inter-hospital medical transportation.
While the free train trips are dedicated to those six hospitals, the partnership also includes support for seven other institutions within the Canada's Children's Hospital Foundations network. Those foundations will receive assistance to enhance their fundraising activities. The seven additional institutions are the BC Children's Hospital Foundation, the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation, the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation, the Jim Pattison Children's Hospital Foundation, the Children's Hospital of Manitoba, the IWK Foundation in Nova Scotia, and the Janeway Children's Hospital Foundation in Newfoundland and Labrador. The official statement noted that children and their families visited children's hospitals in Canada about 3.9 million times during 2025. The new partnership builds on a previous program between VIA Rail and the Children's Health Foundation in London, announced in April 2026. That earlier initiative helped families book more than 250 free train trips for patients of the Children's Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre. The announcement did not include full details on when applications will open, the booking procedures, or the detailed eligibility criteria. Families wishing to benefit are advised to follow official announcements from VIA Rail and the participating health institutions for information on the application process. The step confirms a trend toward reducing non-medical burdens for families during treatment, which can include transportation, accommodation costs, and travel planning over significant distances.
