Smarter Snacks Vegan Protein Puff recalled again for undeclared milk

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has recalled Smarter Snacks Vegan Protein Puff Chili & Lime Flavored from stores across Canada due to undeclared milk.

The agency said the recall was triggered by test results, and there have been no reported reactions associated with the product.

"The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning people who are allergic or sensitive to the affected product not to consume the affected product because it contains milk which is not declared on the label," officials said.

The affected product is 50 g in size, has the UPC number 8 684041 306837, and the impacted codes are 05/05/2026 and SS 125 L1.

"Do not consume affected products to which you are allergic or sensitive as they may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction," the agency said.

It also advised consumers not to serve, use, sell or distribute the affected products.

This is the second recall notice issued for this product this month.

An earlier recall, triggered by a consumer complaint, was also due to undeclared milk.

In that case, officials said there had been one reported reaction.

The CFIA said it is conducting a food safety investigation which could lead to more products being recalled.

Last week, another food recall was issued due to undeclared milk, affecting certain Go! Beanz brand products.

The CFIA said those products were distributed in Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick.

Milk is considered a priority food allergen in Canada.

"When someone comes in contact with a food allergen or added sulphites, the symptoms of an allergic or allergic-type reaction may develop quickly and rapidly progress from mild to severe," the government says.

"The most severe form of an allergic reaction is called anaphylaxis."

The government notes there is a difference between a milk allergy and lactose intolerance.

"A milk allergy occurs when a person’s immune system reacts abnormally to milk proteins; it can be life-threatening," its website says.

"Lactose intolerance occurs when a person cannot digest lactose, a component of milk, because their body does not produce enough of a specific enzyme that breaks down lactose."

Symptoms of lactose intolerance include abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhea after milk ingestion, but it is not an allergy and is not life-threatening.
